The Westwood Transitional Village
The Westwood Transitional Village is a 40-unit residential housing facility that provides support services for homeless families. Families can spend up to two years at Westwood while they stabilize and acquire the skills needed for independent living. Approximately 150 individuals live at The Village at all times; with families of veterans making up forty percent of the residential population, and two thirds of the total population being children. The Westwood ‘campus' includes administrative offices and a community center, as well as an adjacent child development center. The Bessie Pregerson Child Development Center provides licensed childcare to residents as well as low-income families from the surrounding area.
Most residents are graduates of Salvation Army programs, foster care, short-term transitional housing or emergency shelter in the Los Angeles area. These families are not fully prepared to be independent, and need supportive services to transition into long-term independent living situations. At Westwood, each of these families is able to reside in a furnished 1-4 bedroom apartment, with 1- 2 bathrooms, a private entrance and either a small front yard or balcony. All residents participate in a case management plan for the duration of their stay, and supportive services are coordinated by a professional staff. Services include a licensed psychologist, high-level case managers, employment development assistance and coordination of recreational activities.
We are grateful to have launched Take the Cake with such an incredible group at The Village. We are looking forward to celebrating birthdays and getting more involved in the everyday life and support of these families as they work towards living on their own again.
